One of my favorite places in California is McArthur Burney Falls State Park. This beautiful evergreen forest area, located just north of Redding, is famous for its 129-foot waterfall, which cascades from Burney Creek down into Lake Britton.

While you’re here, you can explore the nearby hiking trails (including the Pacific Crest Trail), go swimming in Lake Britton, or go on a photography hunt for nesting bald eagles.

The developed campground, with 128 sites, has a convenience store, restrooms, showers, fire rings and dump station.

For a unique overnight, book one of their little 1- or 2-bedroom cabins, which have their own fire rings, propane heaters, picnic tables and bunk beds. (You supply the bedding, flashlights and lanterns, as there is no electricity.)

Don’t miss the park’s annual Heritage Day, which celebrates the life of the park’s settlers, Samuel Burney and the McArthurs, with several living history events and activities. It’s held annually in October on Columbus Day.

The Burney Falls General Store sells grocery items, souvenirs and snacks. At Lake Britton Marina (530-335-5713), you can rent a canoe, paddle or rowboat for a day on the water.

Other nearby attractions include Whiskeytown, Castle Crags, and Lassen Volcanic National Park. Camping reservations can be booked online or by calling (800) 444-7275.
