Built in 1857, San Diego’s Whaley House is considered to be “America’s most haunted house.” Not surprisingly, this is a hot destination during the Halloween season, when crowds line up for a glimpse of its famous ghosts.

The dining room at Whaley House has a very eerie vibe.

Owner Thomas Whaley is believed to haunt the upper landing, and Yankee Jim, who was hung in the gallows outside, has been seen in the parlor. The ghost of Anna Whaley is rumored to haunt the garden and downstairs rooms.

After you’ve had your fill of the supernatural, head outside to their gardens for an alligator sausage Po-Boy or hearty bowl of gumbo in the nearby New Orleans Creole Cafe, which dates back to the 1890s.

The Whaley House Museum Gift Shop sells an assortment of supernatural books and collectibles to share with the folks at home.

Winter and spring hours vary, so call ahead for exact operating times. For the ultimate ghost-hunting experience, join their private after-hours tours, which start at 10 p.m.
