Cambria, a charming seaside hamlet located just a few miles from Hearst Castle, dates back to 1866. Today, this picturesque artist’s village, which is flanked by coastal pines and crashing surf, makes an idyllic weekend getaway.

You can shop at high-end boutiques along East and West Village; picnic at Moonstone Beach or Leffingwell’s Landing; or get up close to one of the largest populations of elephant seals in the country. If you are spending a day on the beach, order a deli sandwich to go from Soto’s True Earth Market (2244 Main St., 805-927-4411).

One of the town’s most interesting attractions is Nit Wit Ridge (881 Hillcrest Drive; 805-927-2690), a unique 1930s home built out of junk and reclaimed materials. Guided tours are offered by appointment.

If you’re doing the Big Sur coastal tour, Cambria is a nice place to stop for lunch. Black Cat Bistro (1602 Main Street; 805-927-1600) is a favorite of locals, who rave about their inventive global cuisine; while Madeline’s (788 Main St; 805-927-4175) is a romantic choice for dinner. For dessert, dig in to the olallieberry pies from Linn’s Easy as Pie Cafe (4251 Bridge Street; 805-924-3050.

Overnight accommodations are heavy on the B&Bs. A few standouts include the Blue Dolphin Inn (800-222-9157), J. Patrick House (800-341-5258) and Sand Pebbles Inn (805-927-5600).
